Chapter Eight

At David’s insistence they drove in together. Lyle knew it was folly but David stood firm on them not being ashamed of being ‘friends’ and how ridiculous it was to drive two cars to the same location. Insisting David drop him off before he entered the parking garage and his assigned space, Lyle accepted his quick peck on the lips, then hopped out of his Mercedes and stood still for a moment as it vanished into the underbelly of the building.

Inhaling the warm air, Lyle popped his hat on his head and began walking to the foreman to find out what he was doing for the day. The minute he spotted Jeff, he cringed.

“You’re on the south side exterior,” Keith said.

“Okay, boss.” Lyle nodded, then headed to the ladder. Before he had made it to his spot, Jeff was under him, climbing like a rat to catch up. Once they were both standing on the same level on the scaffolding, waiting for the windows to be lifted to them by a small crane, Lyle said, “Leave me alone.”

“I saw you come in with him.”

“Shut up, Jeff.”

“I saw you get out of his car. You made up Michelle, didn’t you? You fucking liar. You are queer.”

“I said, shut up, Jeff.” Lyle grabbed at the edge of the new windows as they swung close, steadying them.

“You acted like I was a freak pushing me away like 110

that when you like men’s cocks!”

“Shut up!” Lyle roared. “Are you helping me with the fucking windows or not?”

They both heard shouting underneath them.

Someone was waving at Jeff and calling him down. Lyle felt a slight cold chill wash over him even though the morning air was already warm. Instantly Jeff spun around and glared at Lyle to accuse him. “What the fuck did you do to me now?”

“Me?” Lyle pointed to his own chest in defense.

Another man was seen climbing up to their level.

When he got to them he said to Jeff, “Enright wants you.”

After one more punishing glare from Jeff aimed at Lyle, Jeff began his descent to ground level.

Lyle asked, “What the hell’s going on, Brad?” He shrugged, “The project manager wants to talk t o him. I have no idea what he’s done. He’s such a fuck-up it could be anything.”

That was the first time Lyle had heard anyone commenting on Jeff’s work ethic. Lyle was the new guy on the job. He had no idea what these other men knew about his roommate. Trying not to get distracted by what was happening to Jeff, Lyle nodded to Brad he was ready. They began pulling the windows off the lift and onto the scaffolding just as the men inside the office pried the old ones out.

“Best. Get over here.”

Jeff lowered his head sheepishly and approached him.

“You’re off the job. Go back to the main office and see if they can reassign you.”

“What? Why? I haven’t done nothing wrong!”

“Well, you must have, because these orders are from Mr. Thornton himself.”

Jeff
